A group of employees from the Amazon fulfilment centre in Durham have spent time volunteering with two cancer support charities.
14 team members from the Durham fulfilment centre volunteered at Fighting All Cancers Together (FACT) and Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Trust. During the volunteering activities, the team organised raffle prizes and prepared an allotment to create a community garden.
FACT offers a range of support to people diagnosed with cancer. The charity provides education and awareness programmes to families across the North East.
Solan Connor Fawcett offer bespoke support service to adults and children who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis or bereavement. The charity provides emotional, physical and practical care to make the process as easy as possible for patients and their families.
In addition, £1,000 was donated to Solan Connor Fawcett Trust, going towards equipment for the charity’s new wellness centre. The centre will be a hub for counselling, holistic therapies and hair and beauty treatments for the 600 plus families that Solan Connor Fawcett Trust are currently supporting.
David Hall, General Manager at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Durham, said:
“We are pleased to offer our assistance to FACT and Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Trust. They’re both wonderful organisations, and everyone involved makes such a difference to people and families in need.”
Sammie Hurton, who works at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Durham and volunteered at FACT, added:
“We had a great time volunteering at FACT. It was so rewarding to show our support and learn more about how much of an impact the team has on families in the North East. We were so glad that we could show our appreciation to the team and contribute to our community.”
Mark Solan from Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Trust, added:
“On behalf of everyone at Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Trust, we would like to thank David and the Amazon Durham team for their support. The team from Amazon has done a tremendous job in helping us get our new community garden ready for opening.”
Community donations and employee volunteering are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in need. The initiative has donated more than 3 million surplus goods to over 400,000 families across Scotland, Wales, Greater Manchester, and London.
Amazon has supported more than 700,000 students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.
Amazon partners with Comic Relief and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people across the UK, and around the world.
