Young County Durham artists will soon have the chance to learn from one of Britain’s most famous illustrators.

A family ticket for a drawing workshop with Nick Sharratt is the incredible prize in a contest running across all County Durham’s libraries.

Nick is best-known for his work illustrating Dame Jacqueline Wilson’s massively popular children’s novels. And Nick will be putting in an appearance at Durham’s Gala Theatre next month – where he will host one of his Right Royal Drawalong sessions.

To enter the competition, children should collect a special drawing sheet from their local library and draw their own Right Royal character. The drawings should be returned to the child’s local library by noon on Thursday 7th February, after which they will be entered in a prize draw.

Nick will present his Right Royal Drawalong at the Gala on Wednesday 20th February at 2.00 pm. In the fun-filled workshop, Nick will teach participants how to draw characters such as Tracy Beaker and Timothy Pope.

Nick will also be giving tips on how to create fantastical creatures like dragons and unicorns, as well as offering plenty of other advice to budding creatives.

County Durham’s principal library manager, Linda Dobson, said, “Nick’s style is instantly recognisable. He has illustrated close to 260 books, including You Choose, Shark in the Park, and Pants and has worked with a host of famous names, including The Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson and Michael Rosen, author of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.”

“We’re delighted to be running this competition in our libraries, to complement our library activities such as Toddler Time, and free access to our fantastic range of toddler books, children’s and teens’ titles.”

“Junior borrowers can choose from all the current top picks and old favourites by becoming a free library member and little ones can bring their adults along to listen to a story, sing a song or join in crafts at libraries’ regular Toddler Time sessions.”

Tickets for Nick Sharratt’s Right Royal Drawalong session at the Gala Theatre cost £10, £8 for concessions. The session is suitable for all children aged four and above.

You can reserve tickets by visiting the Gala’s box office, by going to www.galadurham.co.uk or by telephoning 03000 266 600.
