Richard Holden, Member of Parliament for North West Durham, joined fellow County Durham MPs Paul Howell, Matt Vickers, Peter Gibson and the Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick MP, in celebrating County Durham Day (20 March).

Celebrated on 20th March, County Durham day helps mark the county’s rich history of farming, mining and industrial prowess, including its history of being the heart of the railway industry. To recognise the day, Richard Holden and fellow County Durham MPs Paul Howell, Matt Vickers and Peter Gibson joined the Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick MP in raising the county’s blue and yellow flag outside the offices of the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government in London.

County Durham has celebrated its official county day for hundreds of years. It is marked on 20th March as the patron saint of Northumbria, Saint Cuthbert, an important figure in the North East of England in medieval times, died on this day in AD 687. He is buried at Durham Cathedral.

Commenting, Richard Holden MP said:

“I am delighted that today we celebrated County Durham day by raising our blue and yellow flag at the heart of Government in central London.

“County Durham Day has been celebrated for hundreds of years, and while we are not able to celebrate how we normally would do this year, I am delighted that the Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick and fellow County Durham MPs Paul Howell, Matt Vickers and Peter Gibson could join me in marking this incredibly important occasion.

“Through flying our flag we recognise the incredible cultural and industrial history of County Durham and our county gets the recognition it deserves on the national stage for all that it contributes to our country.

“I am incredibly proud to be the Member of Parliament for North West Durham and represent part of County Durham both locally and in Parliament. I know that all my constituents will join me in welcoming this day and celebrating the fantastic things we have to offer.”
