Durham Teen Sam Lavery Wows X-Factor
Sam Lavery wowed the judges yesterday

After her stunning performance on last week’s X-Factor, Sam Lavery has wowed the judges again this week. In a special Halloween ‘Fright Night’ edition of the show, Sam yesterday delivered a powerful rendition of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Last week, her version of Michael Jackson’s Earthsong drew a standing ovation from all but one judge. The only judge Sam didn’t get on her feet was ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. But this week, even Nicole was calling Sam’s performance “a masterpiece”.

Sam’s mentor Simon Cowell, however, got a few boos when he said he thought he’d let Sam down and that she should be doing more by this stage of the contest. Cowell said, “I’m criticising myself – you’re better than this.” But he also said he was sure Sam would be safe this week.

Sam, 17, is from the village of Coxhoe, near Durham. And her home village is fully supporting her on her X-Factor adventure. The Red Lion pub, next door to Sam’s house, is displaying a huge ‘Vote Sam’ banner. A poster has also gone up on the side of Coxhoe’s chemists shop and the parish council has printed hundreds of flyers and posters backing Sam. Sam’s mam, Tracey, said,

“Sam was over the moon when she saw the pictures of the banners on the red lion. She’s played a few charity events there and they say they have to get extra staff in there whenever she sings it gets that full!”

“Every house and all the shops have posters. The village is totally behind her. I’ve never felt so much love from the village. It’s a lovely feeling.”

“She’s seen it all and she can’t believe all the support. Newcastle and Sunderland football clubs are getting behind her too.”

And Sam popped into Saint James’s Park during a surprise trip home this weekend. She was in the crowd watching the Magpies demolish Preston.

On her trip home, she also surprised Tracey at work. This was shown on Sam’s VT, causing judge Sharon Osbourne to say she was “welling up.”

The Red Lion’s landlady Charmaine Newton commented,

“People come in and say ‘I hope you’re showing the X-Factor mind!’ Like everyone else in Coxhoe, we’re so proud of her. She’s put the place on the map and everyone is talking about her. She’s so natural and down-to-earth and I’m sure she’ll do well.”
