Durham MG and Classic Car Club were spotted enjoying the beautiful countryside in and around Crook as part of the Gulf Road Trip – an exhilarating adventure travelling between Gulf sites across Scotland and England, from Glasgow to Bristol.

Throughout October the special cross-country road trip saw members of classic car groups including QS Car Club, MG Owners Club, Cumbria Classic Car Club and Glasgow Moggies, rise to the Gulf Road Trip challenge, clocking up more than 300 miles between them.

The range of vehicles used by the road trippers was hugely impressive, including classics like 1960s Morris Minors, affectionately known as ‘Moggies’, a range of Triumph TRs, and even an MG TC from 1932.

Of course, the fun of a road trip is the sights you see and adventures you have along the way. As the adage goes, it’s about the journey not the destination. And what a journey these road trip participants had!

Each of the Gulf sites visited rolled out the red carpet to welcome the Gulf Road Trip drivers.

Participants got to meet the friendly on-site Gulf teams and sample tasty treats including Costa Coffee drinks and Rollover hotdogs.

Not only this but they had their moment in the spotlight for a photoshoot which drew crowds including local residents and other car enthusiasts.

“We had heavy rain in the morning so lots of spray, but it didn’t put us off.

“I produced a little route book and led the way, so we were driving in a convoy.

“It was a fun day and we all felt quite important with the photographer there and the banners – we were chuffed to see those!

“One of our members Roy, who’s in his 80s, came along in his MG TC from 1932 and he was joined by his son who was doing the directions.

“We had a few bumps in the road. One of our member’s breaks went part way through the road trip and someone else got lost at one point but we all made it home in one piece.

“They were all very friendly at the Gulf sites. We got our coffee and sandwiches at the SPAR shops. We all felt very special.”

Mike Forbes from Durham MG and Classic Car Club

“The road trip was a huge success! Gulf super fans have long been asking for a road trip across our sites, so we’re thrilled to have made that happen with the help of car groups nationwide.

“It’s been great to shine a light on these eye-catching cars and our independent sites through the road trip.

“Our drivers braved the autumn weather and brought a smile to the faces of Gulf customers, team members and local residents. We’re very grateful for all their support!”
