A SCHOOL’s Fun Club that has been a vital part of the community for 30 years is celebrating being shortlisted for two top accolades at the 2024 national OSCA’s (Out of School Club Awards).
Sedgefield Out of School Fun Club, which provides essential before and after-school care and holiday programs, has been named one of the top three finalists for the ‘Out of School Club of the Year‘ award – selected from over 120 entries nationwide.
Additionally, Allison Usher, the Club’s chairperson and a dedicated volunteer for 19 years, has been shortlisted for the ‘Support Worker of the Year‘ award.
“Entering the awards was a fantastic opportunity to showcase everything we’ve built here. We’re incredibly proud of our club and the amazing team that makes it all happen.
“Allison’s dedication is truly exceptional; she’s been the nucleus of everything, supporting the team through good times and bad. Her passion for the children’s wellbeing and the community is at the heart of everything we do, and without her, we wouldn’t have the wonderful place we have today.”

Established in 1994, Sedgefield Fun Club, a non-profit, registered charity located on the grounds of Sedgefield Primary School, has grown to provide care for up to 53 children per session, with more than 130 children currently on roll.
Over her 19 years of voluntary service, Allison has been instrumental in spearheading transformative projects, including fundraising for a purpose built facility which opened in 2017 and navigating the Club through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’ve been with Fun Club for nearly two decades because I believe in the difference we make for families and children. Seeing the children grow, learn and enjoy their time here is incredibly rewarding. My aim is always to ensure that every child feels valued, supported and has fun—that’s what it’s all about.”

Sedgefield Fun Club has a team of 15 staff providing wraparound care for children aged 3-11 and offers a diverse range of activities. Beyond the care provided, the children actively engage in community projects, such as creating ‘kindness packs’ for elderly residents and organising food drives for North East charity Feeding Families.
“As we mark our 30th anniversary, the recognition from the OSCA’s is a huge honour for everyone involved. We’re incredibly proud of our team, and of course, of Allison, whose tireless work has been key to our success.”
