COVID-19 National Day of Reflection

Covid-19 National Day of Reflection

The Government has announced a National Covid-19 Day of Reflection on 8th March this year, backed by the Department of Digital Media, Culture and Sport, full details of which can be found here: https://dayofreflection.campaign.gov.uk/resources/

In Sunderland, local members of COVID-19 Bereaved Families for Justice have decided to mark the day on 7th March at Sunderland Minster. We are inviting anyone in the North East who lost a loved one during the pandemic to attend from 3:00 pm until 5:30 pm, especially if their loved one was lost to COVID-19.

As far as we know, we are the only event in the North East to mark the day.

The day will open with a ceremony led by Sunderland Interfaith Forum, attended by the Mayor at 3:00 pm.

There will be a variety of memorialization activities, as well as space for anyone to reflect on their experiences of the pandemic, whether they lost a loved one or not.

We’re going to display photographs of people lost during the pandemic, and jpegs of them can be sent to [email protected].

While other cities and local authorities, including South Tyneside, have already erected memorials in their towns and villages, Sunderland has yet to acknowledge the immense loss suffered by the city and its environs. It is important, as people bereaved by COVID-19 reach the 6th anniversary of their loved ones’ deaths, and the 6th anniversary of the first national lockdown, we reflect on what those experiences meant to us, or how they affected us.

This should be a moment of coming together in community support of each other, as we think about the monumental thing which happened to our city, region and country in 2020.
