A 94-year-old fitness enthusiast will be helping celebrate the 20th anniversary of the gym he credits with keeping him healthy.

Roy Heale has been going to the gym at Spennymoor Leisure Centre since it first opened 20 years ago. Despite being in his mid-nineties, Mr Heale still works out at the gym three times a week.

Mr Heale said, “Going to the gym has been an important part of my life and as well as keeping fit is a great way to meet plenty of people.”

“I hope people see that age should never be a barrier and that anyone can come to the gym – there really is something for everyone.”

To celebrate its anniversary, the gym is inviting new and existing members for a slice of birthday cake from 5.00 pm on Tuesday, 13th March.

As well as enjoying a free piece of cake, anybody who fancies joining the gym can find out about the facilities on offer and the types of gym membership available.

All new members will receive a free three-day Thrive pass, which will allow them to try out the facilities and take part in classes such as cycle energy, Metafit, kettlebells, body combat and boot camp.

In addition, new members will get a free personal programme containing tips and advice, along with a free Thrive card worth £5.00, which can be used to take advantage of various discounts and to make bookings online.

When the gym at Spennymoor Leisure Centre opened twenty years ago, it aimed to promote fitness for all, increase female membership and provide a friendly environment in which to work out.

Alister Ruddick, who worked at the gym when it first opened and is now a membership and fitness consultant, said, “A lot has changed since we opened in 1998, particularly the equipment on offer.”

“But ever since we first opened, we have worked hard to make the gym a comfortable and welcoming place where people can make positive improvements to their health and well-being.”

“We hope the open day encourages those who have been thinking about joining the gym to come and see what’s on offer and take advantage of our special deals.”
