Two local charities received a welcome boost during a busy Great North Run weekend, as employees at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Durham came together to pack and donate drinks, snacks and sweet treats to help keep their teams fuelled throughout a weekend of fundraising and racing.
The donation supported Heel and Toe Children’s Charity and Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, with Heel and Toe’s teams taking part in a charity Golf Day, the Mini/Junior Great North Run and the Great North Run itself, while more than 80 runners representing Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust received supplies at the finish line of the half marathon.
Michael Collier, Site Leader at Amazon in Durham, said:
“It was a pleasure to donate supplies to both charities this weekend. More than 60,000 runners took to the streets of the North East to raise money for such wonderful causes, and I hope our donation helped keep those racing for both charities well fuelled.”
Mandy Hammond Community Fundraiser from Heel and Toe Children’s Charity, added:
“I’d like to say thank you to everyone at Amazon in Durham for this fantastic donation. The kindness and support means so much to us and kept our amazing teams fuelled throughout the weekend.”
Michelle Atkinson Fundraising and Development Lead from Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, said:
“We are grateful to everyone at Amazon in Durham for getting behind our Great North Run team. The support and kindness shown to our runners is truly appreciated.”
Community donations and employee volunteering are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in need. The Junction Multibank opened in 2024, with Middlesbrough charity The Junction. The initiative has donated more than 12 million surplus goods to over 800,000 families across Wales, Scotland, Greater Manchester, London, Tees Valley and Birmingham. This year, the Multibank will send 1 million orders to families across the UK.
Amazon has supported more than one million students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.
Amazon partners with Comic Relief and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people across the UK, and around the world.
