Travel back in time at Beamish Museum to discover how Easter was celebrated in the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s with a whole host of egg-citing activities.
The County Durham museum will be celebrating with Easter family activities from 12th to 27th April and enjoying an egg-stra special Easter Weekend, 18th to 21st April.
Have a go at a free Easter trail across the museum every day. Also, in The 1900s Town, join in The Great Bunny Hunt and keep watch for the hidden patchwork bunnies – will you find them all?
Call into the photographers’ in The 1900s Town and have a special Easter portrait taken (extra charge applies).
Over the Easter Weekend, 18th to 21st April, try your hand at some spring crafts as you venture through the museum’s time periods, including Easter basket-making at the 1950s welfare hall, and colouring-in at the 1940s and 1950s Farms.
From Saturday, 19th April to Monday, 21st April, head to The Pit Village school to make your very own suncatcher, get competitive with egg rolling in The 1900s Town park, and have a go at egg jarping at Pockerley Old Hall, a game a little like conkers but with eggs!
See traditional baking demonstrations and food displays across the museum. From lamb dinner to Simnel cake and hot cross buns, find out what Easter food would’ve been enjoyed in each area of the museum.
There will also be opportunity to try some delicious Easter treats from times gone by. Tuck into fish and chips from Davy’s or Middleton’s chip shops, treat yourself to baked goods from Joseph Herron’s Bakery or enjoy freshly-prepared fare from John’s Café or the Tea Rooms.

“The Easter holidays are a fantastic way for us to kick off the main season at Beamish. We have two free trails taking place across the two weeks, from 12th to 27th April, taking place both across the museum and in our 1900s Town.
“We then have a range of activities happening over the Easter Weekend, with family games and crafts, including egg rolling and jarping, and, of course, lots of tasty treats to try! With free entry to the museum for Unlimited Pass holders and Friends of Beamish members, Beamish is a perfect place to visit during the Easter holidays!”
From beautiful Georgian gardens to a spot of Edwardian shopping, delicious traditional fish and chips, exploring The 1940s Farm and getting a fabulous 1950s hairstyle, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during a visit to Beamish.
The award-winning open air museum opened new exhibits last year. Don’t forget to visit the Drovers Tavern and Georgian pottery in the 1820s Landscape and call into the Grand cinema, electrical shop, toy shop and record shop in The 1950s Town.
Daytime events are included in museum admission and are free to Beamish Unlimited Pass holders and Friends of Beamish members, pay once and visit free for a year!
