A free event for residents and businesses in County Durham will take place next month to educate people about how to avoid scamming scumbags and the scummy scams they constantly commit.
A series of talks from the Council, Constabulary and Friends Against Scams will offer people the opportunity to learn more about the different types of scams, how to spot them and how to support a victim.
The event will take place from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Thursday 5 March at County Hall.
Those who support or come into contact with vulnerable people, such as healthcare professionals or community organisations are encouraged to attend.
The Council’s trading standards team will discuss doorstep crime, victimology, offenders and common practices, as well as how to help prevent and detect incidents occurring in their neighbourhoods.
Durham Constabulary’s cyber protect team will give a presentation on cybercrime, common cyber scams such as phishing emails and messages, how to secure online accounts and ways to report cybercrime.
As a general rule, if you get a call or email from someone claiming to be from a big company, like Apple, Microsoft, or a bank, when you weren’t expecting a call, hang up (or don’t reply, if it’s an email) and contact that company directly if you have any concerns.
The National Trading Standard’s Friends Against Scams team will highlight the scale of the problem nationally and provide information on the different types of scams available and how to spot and support a victim.
Cllr Lucy Hovvels intoned: “This day is all about making sure people feel equipped and supported. Scams can cause emotional and financial upset for those who are victims. We want to offer advice from experts and show people how they can protect themselves, and where to find assistance should they need it.”
Joanne Waller said: “Reporting scams is not only about stopping crime, but also about looking after your community, particularly those most vulnerable. Sharing professional advice through this series of talks aims to equip people with the best ways to avoid and deal with scams.”
