Bishop Auckland Events Programme Offers Family Fun Throughout the Year

The council’s programme of support continues throughout the year, with a wide range of free, family-friendly events offering something for everyone.

Behind the scenes, the council’s office team works hard to develop and coordinate community-focused ideas that help bring the programme to life.

Until Saturday 30 August, families can enjoy the Enchanted Bishop Auckland Trail, a free activity that takes visitors around the town in search of enchanting brick-built characters. Participants can solve clues along the way, with prizes up for grabs.

From 7 to 20 September, the Council is funding Bishop Auckland’s WordFest, titled ‘Turn the Page’ hosted by Dispel Arts at the Artists Hub. The festival will celebrate reading and writing through a programme of creative workshops, community events and showcases featuring local authors and illustrators.

On Saturday 26 September, the Council will also host the annual Heritage Fair, which has become a highlight of Bishop Auckland’s cultural calendar. The free event brings families, residents, and visitors together for a packed programme of talks, exhibitions and activities celebrating the town’s heritage. This year the event will take place in the Artist Hub whilst the Northern Bygone Society will be showcasing classic and vintage cars in the marketplace.

Marking Remembrance Sunday on 8 November the Council has once again organised a special commemorative event attended by veterans, cadets and for local people to pay their respects. As part of the commemorations, soldier silhouettes will be installed in the flower beds on either side of the war memorial, creating a poignant tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.

Town Clerk Sarah Harris said:

“The Town Council recognises the significant value that events bring to Bishop Auckland. They are about far more than entertainment; they are an important way of bringing people together, supporting local trade and celebrating what makes Bishop Auckland such a special place.

“The Town Council is proud to support initiatives that benefit our residents, families and help our town flourish. We are pleased to continue investing in events that create lasting memories, strengthen community spirit and deliver long-term benefits for our community.”

The Town Council is also once again a principal partner of Christmas Town, which returns for its sixth consecutive year, taking place on 3 to 6 December. The event will once again transform Bishop Auckland into a winter wonderland, with outdoor entertainment and festive family activities. The popular event has previously seen the town crowned the ‘Christmas Capital of the North’.
