Durham University Student’s Finnish Ironman & Zambian Expedition

James Nugent, a 26 year old student at Durham University, has been training since infancy to complete the Ironman challenge

In the bright sunny mountains of Scandinavia, The IRONMAN Finland Triathlon is a gentle 2.4 mile swim through 18 degree waters, followed by a casual 112 mile bike ride, and then a full marathon – that’s a 26.2 mile run – to wind down at the end.

IRONMAN is regarded as one of the hardest mass sporting events, and James is planning on completing it in fourteen hours like a champion. To reduce his aerodynamic friction, in true warrior fashion, James will wax his legs and then shave his head, which will also save time putting a swimming cap on and off.

James is doing it all to raise money for local communities in Lusaka, Zambia, where he may settle down after graduation to farm and raise livestock if the locals have their way. The money will help local communities through sport by providing equipment, and feed children in an orphanage.

Winter in Zambia

Looking to the future, he plans on conquering Ironman challenges closer to home, swimming the Pennington Flash, cycling through Lancashire because of all the hills, and running the Bolton marathon, supporting local charities as well as those further afield.

He has a Just Giving page, every donation counts!
