Worms & Warriors Press has released a new history book by County Durham author Nick McLean, shining a spotlight on one of the North East’s most important but overlooked battles.
A King’s Gamble: The Neville’s Cross Campaign, 1346 tells the story of the Scottish invasion of northern England and the dramatic clash fought just outside Durham on 17 October 1346.
The book brings to life the campaign that led to the capture of King David II of Scotland, blending vivid storytelling with historical detail to make the events accessible to modern readers.

“Growing up in the North East, I was always struck by how little people knew about Neville’s Cross, despite it being one of the most significant battles fought here. This book is my attempt to put it back on the map and to tell the story not just of kings and nobles, but of the ordinary men who fought and died outside Durham’s walls.”
