Cornerstone Supported Housing and Counselling, a leading homeless charity in the Northeast, has been a beacon of hope and support for vulnerable individuals for over 20 years.

Dedicated to providing both housing and comprehensive support services, Cornerstone is continuously evolving to better serve the community.

Nearly two years ago, a new and unlikely member joined Cornerstone’s homeless prevention team, Bob the dog. Initially accompanying the team during their nightly street sweeps for exercise, Bob quickly proved to be more than just a furry companion.

His presence had an extraordinary impact on individuals experiencing homelessness, encouraging engagement and trust from those who were often difficult to reach.

Recognising Bob’s potential, his owner, Nicky Morson, reached out to Therapy Dog Training UK to explore the possibility of qualifying Bob as a therapy dog specifically to support the homeless. Bob’s training began immediately, and he is now one of the only therapy dogs in the county.

“Bob is a massive asset to the support we provide to all service users. Individuals who have struggled to engage in the past or have difficulty expressing how they feel have really opened up with Bob’s presence, which has a big positive impact on their support,”

Bishop Auckland’s Cornerstone Introduce Bob the Therapy Dog, A Four-Legged Hero

Cornerstone recently expanded its impact with the opening of its first second-hand furniture shop on Finkle Street, Bishop Auckland. The shop accepts donations of furniture that would otherwise end up in landfills, and these items are used to furnish supported accommodations for service users. Those moving through Cornerstone’s housing pathway can select their own furniture, making their new living space feel more like home.

Excess furniture donations are sold to the public, with all proceeds directly supporting Cornerstone’s mission to house and support the homeless in the area. The charity also collaborates with other local charities and organisations, donating items to support families in need.

Cornerstone’s latest partnership with the Newgate Centre marks another exciting development. The Newgate Centre will soon showcase Cornerstone’s garden furniture, including a large summerhouse, within the shopping centre. Also, a textile recycling bin has been placed on the first floor of the multi-story car park, offering the community an easy way to contribute to Cornerstone’s efforts.
