A Darlington resident has revealed her secret to a long life as she celebrated her 104th birthday this week.
Vera Jackson, who lives at Care UK’s Ventress Hall on Trinity Road, marked the occasion surrounded by her family and friends.
To make the day extra special, staff at Ventress Hall decorated the home with vibrant balloons and banners, and treated Vera to a specially made birthday cake from the home’s chef.
When asked what her secret to living a long, fulfilling life was, Vera said:
“Being a good Christian and having faith.”
Born on Sunday 27th November 1921 in Kibblesworth, Vera is the eldest out of eight children.
Throughout her life, Vera worked several jobs, including cleaning positions and a warden at the sheltered housing scheme at Pembroke Court in Darlington, until her retirement in 1986.
She met her husband, Thomas William Jackson and together they shared a great life. The couple went on to have three children, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.
Over the years, Vera has enjoyed a variety of hobbies, such as playing the piano, seeing friends and family, and getting involved in Church events, which she still does today.
Commenting on her birthday, Vera said:
“I enjoy every birthday because it means spending time with my family. As for turning 104, I cherish the years and hold on to every single moment.”
Diane Encinias, Home Manager at Ventress Hall, said:
“We love any excuse to celebrate a milestone at the home, and Vera’s birthday was no exception.
“It was such a special day celebrating her birthday surrounded by loved ones and hearing her share her advice on living a long, happy life.
“Vera is very much loved at the home and is quite the showgirl, often playing the piano for her fellow residents. Her kind nature and quick-witted humour make her an absolute delight to be around. Cheers to Vera!”
