A new local radio station for County Durham has launched online, and ‘The Diva Of Durham’ herself, Sue Sweeney, is returning to host a brand new program.

Sue is returning to radio having presented for over 20 years on BBC local radio in the North East, appearing on BBC Radio Cleveland before moving to BBC Radio Newcastle where she hosted a number of different shows in the schedule. Sue left BBC Radio in 2019. Sue will present a brand new program live on Durham OnAir on Mondays and Tuesday evenings from 7pm.

Sue said “I’m thrilled to be part of my home county’s new local station. It’s going to be informative and great fun for the people of County Durham. I can’t wait to get started”

Durham OnAir will broadcast online through its website, smartphone apps and on Alexa smart speakers, offering local programming for residents and businesses of County Durham and Durham City.

The station has been created by Grim Up North LTD, a theatrical events company that also owns and operates the city’s Escape Rooms, Escape Rooms Durham.

A representative from Grim Up North said “Since March of 2020 Durham has been without its own dedicated local radio station. The people of Durham have always had a deep connection to their local stations and they deserve a service that is catered specifically for them to enjoy, and to represent the vibrant culture and life of this amazing county. We are sure that Durham OnAir will become a reliable and trustworthy part of County Durham‘s life, providing local news and great entertainment.”

The station will offer “Just Great Music from the last four decades”, as well as specialist programming across “a wide range of genres”.

Durham OnAir’s Breakfast show will be fronted by local actor Sam Lupton, who has appeared in radio drama and theatre across the country including the west end production of “Wicked” and UK tours of “Avenue Q” and “Little Shop Of Horrors”. He will be joined by fellow Durham actor Joe Purcell.

Other presenters confirmed include Chris Kirk (Heart, The Bay) presenting ‘Durham Drive’ and Alex Sweeney (Tay Radio & BBC Radio Scotland) presenting ‘The Soul Cellar’ on Thursday evenings at 9pm.

Durham OnAir launches at 7am on Thursday 5th November. You can listen by downloading the Durham OnAir app available on Android and ios, on Amazon Echo smart speakers and by visiting www.durhamonair.com
