Chester-le-Street’s Selby Cottage Celebrates Outstanding Ofsted Report

Joy filled a County Durham childcare centre this week as it was awarded an Outstanding rating by Ofsted.

Selby Cottage Childcare Centre in Chester-le-Street received glowing praise for its dedicated and nurturing staff, inspirational leadership, and warm, supportive environment where children thrive, feel secure, and are happy to learn.

Inspectors also noted how the Durham County Council centre provides a range of exciting indoor and outdoor activities for children both within the setting and the wider community. This includes playing in the centre’s mud kitchen, as well as regular visits to a swimming pool, forest school, allotment, local aged miners’ homes and community centre.

Children’s behaviour was found to be exemplary, with staff encouraging them to be respectful, take turns and help others.

Support with communication and language development was rated as outstanding, and babies were noted as being highly engaged.

The report also described staff as being highly motivated and passionate about their roles. In addition, the leadership team, was praised for striving to achieve the highest standards of care and learning for children and for creating a supportive work environment where staff well-being is paramount.

“We’re delighted to receive an Outstanding rating from Ofsted and are especially pleased that the inspectors highlighted what a happy place this is for children, parents and staff.

“We want every child who comes here to thrive, learn valuable life skills and be happy, confident and curious about the world around them. I’m so proud of the team for this achievement and would like to thank them for their dedication. I’d also like to thank our amazing children and parents who make coming to work such a pleasure.”

Lisa Fenwick, manager of Selby Cottage Childcare Centre

“I would like to congratulate the entire Selby Cottage team on this fantastic Ofsted result, which is testament to the hard work, passion and care they demonstrate every day.

“Selby Cottage is a place where children are given the best start in life, with support to develop their language and communication skills and opportunities to socialise and make friends in a safe and nurturing space.

“We’re absolutely committed to supporting the team to continue delivering this excellent standard of care.”

Cllr Cathy Hunt, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for children and young people’s services
