County Durham Duo Named Finalists in National Dream Bestie Design Competition

Two children receiving cancer treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle have been selected as national finalists in the Dream Bestie 2026 competition, organised by Warmies in partnership with Cancer Support UK.

The initiative invites young patients to design their imaginary “Dream Bestie”, a comforting companion that brings them joy during treatment. One winning design will be transformed into a microwaveable plush toy produced by Warmies, with proceeds helping to support the work of Cancer Support UK.

The Dream Bestie 2026 finalists have this week been revealed, with children from across the UK shortlisted for their imaginative creations.

Among the inspiring finalists are County Durham duo:

Abbie, age 9, from Durham: Undergoing treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle—creator of Little Wigs

Deja, age 5, from Darlington: Undergoing treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle—creator of Rozy Bella.

  • Arlo, age 9, from Chipping Sodbury, undergoing treatment in Bristol Children’s Hospital – creator of Turtaco The Turtle Taco
  • Olivia, age 8, from Aberdare in Wales, undergoing treatment at the Noah’s Ark Hospital in Cardiff – creator of Froggie
  • Archie, age 12, from Yorkshire, undergoing treatment at Leeds General Infirmary – creator of Rainbow Dachshund

Each Dream Bestie reflects the children’s imagination, from colourful characters to magical creatures designed to bring comfort and happiness.

The competition was created to give children undergoing cancer treatment a positive creative outlet and something uplifting to focus on during an incredibly challenging time.

David Tweedale, CEO of Warmies said:

“Warmies has always been about comfort and care, so partnering with Cancer Support UK on the Dream Bestie competition is incredibly meaningful for us. The creativity and positivity shown by the children involved has been truly inspiring, and we are honoured to help bring one of these wonderful designs to life.”

Mark Guymer, CEO of Cancer Support UK added:

“Cancer Support UK is committed to ensuring any child diagnosed with cancer can order a free kids kit, including a special Warmies sensory cuddly toy.

“We know how important it is to provide moments of comfort in the most challenging of times and are delighted to partner with Warmies to offer children more moments of joy and comfort with the ‘Dream Bestie’ competition. The competition and last year’s winner, Bat Cat, have been extremely popular. The proceeds will ensure we can continue to provide the much needed practical and emotional support to all those impacted by cancer.”

The winning design will join the growing Dream Bestie collection. The 2025 winner, Spencer, who is being treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital, created the much-loved Bat Cat, which was brought to life as a Warmies plush and is now available to purchase on the Warmies website.

Members of the public are now invited to vote for their favourite design, with the winning Dream Bestie set to be transformed into a microwaveable cuddly toy produced by Warmies.

Voting is open now at: https://cancersupportuk.org/dream-bestie-2026-vote/ and closes 31st March 2026 with the winner announced shortly afterwards.
