The spirit of community and environmental stewardship was in full display yesterday as the first of this year’s Big Spring Clean events took off at Vane Tempest Beach in Seaham.

Volunteers, equipped with bags and grabbers, gathered to tackle litter, setting the pace for a season dedicated to cleansing Durham’s beautiful landscapes. This kickoff is a testament to the growing momentum behind the initiative, aiming not just to clean up but to inspire lasting change in how we care for our surroundings.

A Record-Breaking Year in Review

Reflecting on last year’s achievements, Cllr Mark Wilkes, Durham’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods and climate change, shared some impressive figures. With over 1,500 volunteers participating in 250 litter picking events, the collective effort resulted in the collection of more than 3,000 bags of litter. “That’s a huge difference made to our local environment,” Cllr Wilkes noted, expressing gratitude towards the volunteers. The goal for this year? To surpass last year’s record-breaking involvement.
