Durham School Coach Heading A Summer Swimming Course For Primary School Pupils

A local teacher is set to help young children from nearby schools learn to swim after Covid put a stop to lessons.

Durham School, part of the Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation, is pleased to announce a summer swimming course exclusively for primary school pupils from local state schools. The course will take place between Monday 2 August and Friday 6 August 2021 in its pool on Quarryheads Lane, Durham.

The programme, organised by Head of Swimming at Durham School, Mrs. Naomi Fordyce, has already proved a great success with over half of the 50 places being taken up in the first 24 hours.

48 spaces are available for children in ages 4-11 across four session times 12.30, 1pm, 1.30pm and 2pm. There is a £5 cover charge for each booking, which works out at no more than £1 a session. Durham School has not sought external funding for the project.

Naomi said, “At Durham School, we share the values of Moral Integrity, Ambition, Responsibility and Kindness.  It seemed to those of us involved with swimming courses here that there was a real need to help kids who have missed out on learning to swim. We can’t solve the problem but by offering four, five-day, half-hour programmes, we hope to do our bit.”

These learn to swim sessions are part of a wider programme of summer activities, including 1-2-1 swimming lessons and a “Summer Fun” course.  For more information and to book please visit www.durhamschool.co.uk/courses

If you are a Swimming Teacher and want to volunteer, please contact Durham School to find out how you can get involved with the project.
