Durham’s Dean Midas: The Mobile Phone Horror Director Making Global Waves

Dean Midas, is an award-winning director and writer from Durham, he is known for creating low-budget horror films entirely on his mobile phone. He is attracting a lot of attention around the world for his ability to create films with limited resources and budgets.

Dean’s first ever short film “Legend of the Chained Oak” won awards at the Stoke Your Fires, Portobello, and Bram Stoker Festivals. In 2024, Darkus Magazine named him as their North East Film Maker of the Year award.

Music producer, Sam Haynes called Dean, “The godfather of northern horror”

His more recent horror characters The Rag Dolly, Eve Valentine, Sayer Hicks and Elizabeth Jacobs are building up a huge cult following and his recent short, The Review has now hit over 90K views across all platforms on just a £50 budget.

In the summer of 2024, Dean’s character Eve Valentine was immortalised with her own room at The Manor House Hotel, West Auckland called The Eve Suite.

Dean said,

“The past few years have been absolutely mind blowing. From the award wins, to working with Roger L Jackson, the voice of Ghostface, The Eve Suite and the recent success of The Review”

Mr. Midas continued, “This has all been done with a mobile phone, a lot of hard work and being around a fantastic team and a bunch of hugely talented north east actors”

Dean Midas is currently working on new projects for the rest of 2025, including directing a family-friendly kids’ zombie film called Alfie’s Dream, written by Gordon Hindson.

He is also open to collaborations with other script writers and his dream is to be asked to direct a full-length cinema feature film.
